Description

Elevation and Depth is the measurement of the Earth’s surface (wet or dry) above or below a vertical datum to obtain either the height of the land or a bathymetric depth. Elevation and Depth information data is collected using a range of sensors; including laser, sound navigation and ranging (sonar), radio detection and ranging (radar), optical remote sensing and survey techniques to derive spot heights, raster surfaces, contours and digital models of terrain.

Description

Elevation is the measurement of the Earth’s surface above or below a vertical datum to obtain either the height of the land or a bathymetric depth. Elevation data is collected using a range of sensors, including laser, sonar, radar, optical remote sensing and survey techniques to derive spot heights, raster surfaces, contours, triangulated irregular networks and digital elevation models

Depth - provides an understanding of the nature of the seafloor.

Purpose

Elevation and Depth provides an authoritative digital representation of the Earth’s surface enabling evidence based decision making, policy development and an essential reference to other foundation datasets.

Elevation and Depth underpins:

  • Safe hydrographic, aeronautical and road navigation.
  • Climate Science, including Climate Change Adaptation.
  • Emergency management and natural hazard risk assessment.
  • Environmental, including water management.
  • Engineering projects and infrastructure development.
  • Definition of maritime and administrative boundaries.
  • Defence and national security.
  • Natural resource exploration and exploitation.

Current status

Jurisdictions acquire high resolution elevation data, usually using LiDAR, and usually in parallel with aerial photography acquisition.

Future status

Short term objectives

  • Continued availability of existing national coverage datasets at existing or similar resolutions and accuracy.
  • In addition, the development of an open, fit-for-purpose coherent national DEM with a minimum accuracy of 1m in populated areas and coastal zones and 5m in unpopulated areas. To achieve this, the following will need to be determined:
    • a stock take of existing datasets,
    • economic analysis and justification,
    • funding secured.
  • Engage Industry on validation of use cases for this service

  • All national information products will be available under open access arrangements (for example, by CCBY) at zero cost.

Government users have full access to all data holdings with various licencing agreements.

Description

Purpose

National DEM provides a national authoritative digital representation of the Earth’s surface

Dataset Uses

Key users of the Elevation dataset are Commonwealth, State and Territory and Local governments and the Research and Industry sectors.

  • Sea level rise planning – synthesise terrestrial data with bathymetric data to produce nested and continuous DEM/bathymetry data for sea level rise and inundation modelling
  • Environmental, including water management; Hydro enforcement of DEM critical for catchment delineation and hydrology reporting regions.
  • Definition of administrative boundaries
  • Emergency management and natural hazard risk assessment – flood modelling including risk of flood events, floodplain inundation and planning
  • Engineering projects and infrastructure development.

Current Status

Geoscience Australia curently releases the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission datasets Non-government users can order the 1 second (DEM,DEM-S,DEM-H), 3 second (DSM,DEM,DEM-S) and 9 second (DSM,DEM,DEM-S) elevation data which is licensed under Creative Commons.

Government users have full access to portal data including high resolution LiDAR data.

Future Status

National elevation products will be derived from more finely-detailed data held by local or state/territory authorities. In urban and other areas vulnerable to hazards, the quality of national elevation information will improve from the current 30m spacing to 5m spacing. Elevation products will be more widely delivered as web services.

Current term objective:

  • Developing technics to integrate high resolution dataset in to National DEM dataset.

Long term objectives:

  • Integrate high resolution data sets such as LiDAR data to improve accuracy.

Coverage

National coverage of Australia excluding territories.

Quantity

This DEM was based on the 1 second SRTM-derived Digital Surface Model (DSM) that was itself derived from the 1 second Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission data. The DSM was produced by removing stripes, filling voids and re-flattening water bodies. Further details are provided in the DSM metadata (ANZCW0703013336).

The vegetation removal used the DSM without voids filled so that vegetation height estimates would not be affected by interpolated heights and so that voids adjacent to vegetated areas could be filled using bare-earth elevations

Roadmap for Elevation and Depth

Purpose:

The roadmap outlines the development goals for the following three years, for all national foundation datasets within each theme. The goals are to be achieved in order to meet the defined end-state for the theme.

Details:

  • Goals are owned by the theme sponsor to achieve within the FSDF governance framework
  • Goals are designated as funded/unfunded
  • The roadmap is approved by ANZLIC annually
  • The roadmap will be referenced as a benchmark in work plans and updates to ANZLIC
  • The roadmap is updated annually or on a major change as required

Notes:

1. The roadmaps (and goals) are agreed by ANZLIC and FSDF sponsors. An unfunded goal indicates that the sponsor is actively seeking to resolve the funding issue. Where this cannot be resolved the sponsor may elevate the issue for the attention of ANZLIC.

2. Dataset custodians are identified in the Dataset Profiles available on this website and their role in the delivery of the roadmaps is critical. State/Territory jurisdictions are also integral to the implementation of the roadmaps.

3. Engagement with custodians and/or jurisdictions in the FSDF and roadmaps is an ongoing process through 2015.
